At the last Planning and Development Committee on July 13, I brought up an issue I’ve thinking about regarding our Accessible/Adaptable Units policy. Currently, the policy requires that 20% of new units be adaptable for People With Disabilities, but those units can be occupied by anyone.
I therefore moved a motion for staff to explore how the City can match those units with the folks who need them.
Ableism is deeply embedded in our society, but this is a small first step forwards with so, so much more to do. We need to ensure that People With Disabilities can afford safe & secure housing, to modify their homes as needed, and aren’t forced into poverty, homelessness, or MAID.
